Learn To Lead - ICE301 - back to course listing

This is an advanced level course for climbers who feel ready for the "sharp end". Leading is very rewarding but one really needs to be prepared.  Smuggler’s Notch has a huge variety of beginner leading terrain, making it ideal to take those first steps.

Day one covers protection and anchor systems, gear selection and organization, belay techniques and rope management, rappelling, and route selection. You will end the day with a mock lead (while top-roped) and set up your own descent.

Day two will be consist of more mock leads with the possibility of leading your own climb. There will be more discussion on efficient gear racking strategies and rope management with a half ropes, as well as a familiarization with ice self rescue.

Climbers will come away from this course with a better understanding of the risks involved and the technical skills required to lead waterfall ice. With the help of a guidebook, you should be able to go to any area, choose a climb within your difficulty range, and climb and descend it safely.  Each course and participant is different. Tell us what skills and experiences you need. We will tailor each participant’s course to meet their personal goals.
